Description:

State Medical Assets crossing state boundaries in disaster. Can EMAC really allow state medical assets respond to needs across state lines?

The North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services and North Carolina Division of Public Health will share successes and challenges found in their eight week deployment of 500 healthcare professionals to Waveland, Mississippi. Previously developed State Medical Assistance Teams were combined to provide out of state medical resources such as a field hospital caring for 7500 patients in very obscure surroundings.

Challenges faced by teams included selection of professional specialties in relation to the diverse range of patient needs, time span of staff rotations, mental health of staff, equipment variations, patient transfers, continuous generator use on staff health, creature comforts for staff, on site communications, air to ground communications, Incident Command consistencies, and hospital versus field hospital standards of care.

Target Audience:

All personnel involved in emergency disaster planning.
